Revision of Grand Forks Winter Series from Wed, 02/13/2013 - 07:37

Need a reason to stay active all winter?  Need a reason to get outside?  You've got it!  Welcome to the Grand Forks Winter Series! Here's how it works:

Racers will get points based on participation and results in three events, the Frozen Feat (5K/10K run), the Bikecicle (winter bike race), and the BeMobile Iceman Triathlon.  Because Frozen Feat and Bikecicle take place on the same day, racers will get points for their best result in either race.  Racers completing both races will get bonus points.  The points schedule is as follows:

5k/short/relay

Racers will get the full value of their best event on Saturday, Feb. 14th.  If they do both saturday events, they will get half the point value of their lesser score.  Racers will get the minimum point value automatically for any event in which they participate.  Total points are cumulative.  Check below for examples, or ask questions for clarification if you're trying to decide which categories to enter!

  • Example 1: A racer finishes 3rd in the 5K, 6th in the Long Course, and 4th on a relay team. The events have point values of 8 (5K), 10 (Long Course), and 7 (Iceman).  Their best score from the first race day is 10, so their cumulative score is 10 + 0.5 (8) + 7 = 21
  • Example 2:  A racer gets 8th in the 10K and 5th in the Yeti.  Since they only raced in one event the first weekend they get that score of 8 (10K).  Add to that their Yeti finish for a total score 8 + 15 = 23.
  • Example 3:  A racer gets 5th in both the 10 K and the Long Course.  The Racers score for the first weekends events are 12 (10K) and 12 (Long Course).  Since the value is the same it doesn't matter which one is used for full value.  The cumulative score is 12 + 0.5(12) = 18
  • Example 4:  A racer gets 4th in the 5K, 12th in the Long Course, and 3rd in the Iceman Relay.  First saturday point values are 7 (5K), 2 (long course), and 8 (relay).  They take thier best sat. score, 7, and half of the other races value. The cumulative score is 7 + 1 + 8 = 16.

Standings will be updated after the weekend of Feb. 16th so participants know where they stand going into the final event, BeMobile's Iceman Triathlon.  Top Male and Female in the series will be named King and Queen of Winter and win fabulous prizes.  Awards will be presented following the Iceman Triathlon by the 2012 King and Queen.  Yeah, that's right folks - Mr. Cooley and Ms. Kelly have had their day in the deep freeze... this prize is up for grabs!!!
